Ranjit Gupta

Mr. Gupta was appointed Member of the National Security Advisory Board in November 2008. 67 years old, he is a retired Indian Foreign Service officer. During his 39 year career with the Ministry of External Affairs he served in Cairo, New York (Indian Mission to the UN), Gangtok (when Sikkim merged with India), Jeddah (DCM), Frankfurt (Consul General) and Kathmandu (Deputy Chief of Mission). Later he was successively India’s Ambassador to Yemen (North) 1983-85, Venezuela 1986-89, Oman 1989-94, Thailand 1994-97 and Spain 1998-99 and finally as Head of the Non-official Office in Taiwan 2000-03. At Headquarters he was the first Desk Officer dealing with Bangladesh and later was Head of the Division dealing with West Asia and North Africa. He is Visiting Fellow, Institute of Chinese Studies, New Delhi, since 2004.
